Who am I?
I live near Dumfries in the South West of Scotland. I have over two decades of experience in finance including time in equity research, fund management, a hedge fund, corporate accelerators, private equity, corporate banking, corporate finance advisory and seed funding.
I've also spent time working as CEO, COO or CFO at various small enterprises in the business, social enterprise and charity world. As a child I baked and sold meringues, co-created a magazine and wrote a book of poems.
I spend a lot of time talking with people who have ideas for new things, or have recently launched new ventures, helping them develop concepts, secure finance and build the right type of systems and processes.
I write about whisky elsewhere and have been featured by the BBC, FT, Wall Street Journal, Bloomberg, The Telegraph, The Times and The Dumfries & Galloway Standard as well as many other publications.
I've also done some studies in the combating terrorism field. Just because.
I write this newsletter because:
1) I love writing and people seem to appreciate it
2) People tell me I read broadly and can condense and communicate the key themes clearly and relevantly.
Most importantly, I hope this adds some value to your week.
Readers of The Weekly Distillation say:
“You’ve a way with words blended with an educated balanced insight too.”
“I honestly really enjoy reading these. They’re interesting first off. However, you’ve a way with words that cuts to the chase wrapped up in a smooth sarcastic undertone. Bravo I say.”
“Excellent stuff. Fascinating. Provoking"
“Mate, love the briefing!”
